Norwalk

Norwalk, IA is a great community to call home and be able to enjoy everything the Des Moines Metro area and Central Iowa has to offer. This area has been recognized in many top rankings and could easily be the best place overall to live in the United States.

Norwalk, a suburb of the State Capital, is located on the south side of the metro and is surrounded by rural landscapes. This gives us the benefit of being adjacent to both country and big city life. Norwalk's location also allows easy access to almost everywhere in the Des Moines Metro area with short, easy commutes to Downtown Des MoinesDes Moines International Airport, and Jordan Creek Town Center. Being located on the Hwy 5 beltway, Hwy 28, and Fleur Dr. gives us access to the I80/I35 Interstate system in any direction and is also just minutes to the airport.

The population of Norwalk is just around 14,000 and is growing quickly. It is the 2nd largest community in Warren County and the 32nd largest community in the State of Iowa. Once considered a bedroom community, Norwalk has seen rapid commercial growth recently. It now has lots of dining, retail, service, manufacturing, wholesale, and employment opportunities.

The Norwalk area saw its first settlers in 1846 and as more families moved to the area, the small town became known as Pyra, IA, and later changed its name to Norwalk. A narrow-gauge railroad that connected Des Moines to Cainsville, MO was constructed through Norwalk in 1882. It was widened to standard gauge in the 1890s. The town was incorporated in 1900 and got phone service in 1903.

The city is excited and prepared for the new booming growth, with many new residential developments currently being built. The amount of residential growth is happening naturally with just a little help from a partial tax abatement program currently in place. The city is strategically recruiting commercial development which has been successful. The Norwalk Community School District has done several additions and upgrades to facilities, staying ahead of the student population.

There are many civic and service groups that meet in Norwalk as well as 6 churches. The Norwalk Area Chamber of Commerce is active and thriving, currently with over 200 members. There are several community rooms available for meetings and events. The Norwalk Easter Public Library is very active and is currently planning a major expansion in the next few years. The city has 10 parks with various activities and themes that add to the quality of life here. Norwalk is well-known for having 3 golf courses within the city limits.
