December Home Maintenance Tips
This fall in central Iowa was unusually warm and mild, but as my dad always said, “The weather always seems to average out.” Now, we're experiencing colder-than-normal weather. Many December home maintenance checklists focus on preparing your house for winter, but if you've been following my checklists, most of your outdoor work should already be done.

Here are some practical tips for December to keep your home running smoothly and prepared for the winter months:

1. Order Replacement Items
If you’re like me, January 1st is the day to replace many household items that follow an annual, semi-annual, quarterly, or monthly schedule. Now is the perfect time to order those items so you’re ready. Here’s a list of commonly replaced items:

  • 4” Furnace Filters – Replace quarterly for better air quality and energy efficiency.
  • Refrigerator Water Filters – Replace semi-annually to ensure clean drinking water.
  • Dishwasher and Washing Machine Cleaning Tabs – Use monthly to keep appliances running smoothly.

2. Mark Key Locations
Before the ground freezes, mark key outdoor locations like the edges of driveways, sidewalks, and patios with reflective poles. This makes them visible for you and snow removal services after heavy snowfall. If there’s a fire hydrant near your property, mark and keep it clear of snow to ensure accessibility during emergencies.

3. Pick Up the Yard
Gather and store any outdoor items you don’t want buried under snow all winter, like garden tools, hoses, or decorations.

4. Stock Up on Emergency Supplies
Be prepared for winter emergencies by stocking up on essential items. Here’s what to have on hand:
  • Non-perishable food and bottled water.
  • Flashlights with fresh batteries and candles for power outages.
  • Extra blankets stored in a convenient location.
  • Wet wipes for personal hygiene during water shortages.

5. Prepare Snow Removal Equipment
Locate your snow shovels, scrapers, and warm clothing like gloves and hats. Place them in an easily accessible location for when the snow arrives. For easier snow removal, try shoveling every 1–2 inches of snowfall rather than waiting for it to accumulate.

6. Organize Your Games
Winter often means spending more time indoors, so take a moment to organize your board games, puzzles, and other indoor activities. Check that all pieces are intact and store them somewhere easily accessible for cozy game nights.
